I have hated Valentine’s Day for as long as I could remember for so many reasons. First, I was a late bloomer and didn’t understand the need for coupling….and mostly I still don’t, but I have come to a point where I do appreciate it. Second, I am opposed to all things with the possibility of making some groups feel less-than. I have long been about making people feel good and Valentine’s Day can be very isolating.
My mom and I spent many years celebrating “anti-Valentine’s Day.” We still sent each other chocolate because….ummmm CHOCOLATE!!!
When I met my husband, Valentines Day was actually the day I knew he was the one. We were VERY early in our romance and all silly and giddy. I was working at a Solana Beach Coffee Company (if you’re in San Diego, GO!!!) in Solana Beach, Ca on the weekend and the Saturday before Valentine’s day, a box arrived for me. Inside the box was the fuzziest, most cozy, and pinkest pair of hoodie-footie pajamas I had ever seen in my entire life. After one month of cross-country dating, he’d managed to knock it out of the park. He was it. He got me.
I tell you all that to tell you that we don’t really celebrate many “official” holidays or make them personal, but I do enjoy the festivities.
My daughter started pre-school this year and I volunteered to help plan and host her class’s Valentine’s Day party.
